"If not now, When?" - Happy World Diabetes Day

More than 422Million people have diabetes in the world as of now mostly in low and middle income countries. Though Diabetes is found to be one of the leading causes of deaths, still enough awareness, medication & care is missing. To promote the awareness about Diabetes Mellitus, every year on 14th November, a global campaign is conducted by International Diabetes federation and World Health Organization (WHO). As the insulin was discovered 100years back, this year the theme is “Access to Diabetic Care: If not now, when?”

This COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of testing. It holds good for Diabetes also. As per WHO, “half of the all the adults with Type-2 diabetes are undiagnosed”. So they think they are perfectly fine. Unless & until tested, we won’t come to know our blood sugar levels. Unless it is known, it can't be controlled by taking suitable medicines or insulin. Testing of diabetes is done by measuring the blood glucose levels at lab or personal monitoring with the help of a glucometer.

Normal values

Fasting plasma glucose < 110 mg/dl

HbA1C < 6%

2hrs plasma glucose (after ingestion of 75gm oral glucose load) < 140 mg/dl

Diabetes Mellitus

Fasting plasma glucose > 126 mg/dl

HbA1C > 6.5%

2hrs plasma glucose (after ingestion of 75gm oral glucose load) > 200 mg/dl

https://www.nhp.gov.in/disease/digestive/pancreas/diabetes-mellitus

https://www.who.int/diabetes/publications/Definition%20and%20diagnosis%20of%20diabetes_new.pdf

HbA1 is the three month’s average of the sugars in the blood. HbA1 is nothing but Glycated hemoglobin, which is the sugar-hemoglobin linkage.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glycated_hemoglobin

The access to – awareness, psychological support, healthy diet and physical activity, lab-tests and self- monitoring, oral medicines & insulin are key elements in managing Diabetes.

As it is a life style disease, changes in the life style will being the changes in the level of the disease.

Tusk for Task- Learnings from Lord Ganesha

Face is the index of mind. Lord Ganesha’s face also teaches us many important life lessons. let us mindfully learn from it.

Big Head- We should always think big

Small Eyes- We should focus on our Focus & Concentration

Small mouth & large ears- Talk less and listen more

Trunk- Flexibility, adaptability, maximum intake, reachability

Broken Tusk-Commitment- Lord Ganesha has broken his tusk for writing task of Mahabharata when his pen broke.

Replaced Head- It suggests us to be very careful about our head as it can’t be so easily replaced as in the case of Lord Ganesha. So, we should protect our head by wearing a crash helmet while driving. This is being used to promote road safety by several governments & police. Moreover, commitment to duty and integrity are important things which we can learn from that story of Ganesha stopping Lord Shiva to enter Kailasha as the ganesha was instructed by Parvathi not to allow anyone inside.

The other learnings include-

Rat-vehicle- Though he is very Big, He has chosen a very small rat as His vehicle. It tells us that though we grow big in our life, we should always be down to earth.

Ganesha & Karthikeya’s Race- Circling around the parents instead of circling around the world- Importance of parents, importance of identifying one’s own strengths & weaknesses and making strategies based on that.

We can learn a lot many things from the following-

Finding action in inACTION & inaction in action

“Those who see action in inaction and inaction in action are truly wise amongst humans. Although performing all kinds of actions, they are yogis and masters of all their actions.” – Bhagavad Gita 4.18

This is the translation of the words told by Lord Shri Krishna to Arjuna just before the Action Sequence (Kurukshetra) in Mahabharata.

I feel that it is like a puzzle given to us to see (perceive & interpret) “Action in inaction & inaction in action”. Several people have seen it through their own lenses. I also want to make a conscious attempt to add a little to that spectrum of thoughts. My perspective is –

Acting

In continuation to my previous blogs considering the life as a drama & we all are actors( https://researchsubbu.blogspot.com/2018/09/be-actor-of-emotions.html, https://researchsubbu.blogspot.com/2021/06/be-star-actor.html ), here comes the word “Action”, usually told by the directors in the shooting of a movie… The Supreme Director God himself says about action.

Inaction itself is an action in some scenes where we are not asked to perform. Some scenes may demand no action from some great actors also. So, there is a possibility that Inaction (not doing action) may be the requirement of the script for a particular scene. Thus, unless & until we understand the Bigger Script of God, we should not judge anybody’s action or inaction. Therefore, we can say the action & inaction are purely contextual.

The action of great actors is such that it would appear to be always real. We feel that they are not acting, but they are living in that role. This is inaction in action.

The actor should never feel that he is acting so that he can perform better & looks as if it is real. But at the same time, he should not be carried away by the emotions of the roles he is performing as it is acting only.

Action= life; Inaction=death

Action in Inaction: Even after death also, the thoughts & good deeds of those people will be inspiring others for doing actions. Though they are not alive, their teachings are alive. That is how we can find life in death also.

Inaction in Action: If a person is not doing good things or the things up to his abilities, though he is alive, he is treated as dead. Moreover, nothing is permanent in life. Our life itself is not permanent. Being conscious of this fact is Inaction in Action.

Action=Discharging, Inaction=Charging

Action in inaction may be perceived as the inaction may be the preparation for the action. People take a gap to recharge themselves. They sit back & regain their energies for action. It is like charging the mobile phone.

Inaction in action is like making the unwanted apps inactive to save the power. It will bring down the load or stress.

Action=Body (physical); Inaction=Mind (psychological)

Every work, job, task requires both physical & mental capabilities, but in different proportions. For some jobs, the physical work may be more dominant compared to the mental effort and vice versa. Whereas, usually, as the physical work is visible directly, it is appreciated. Ideally, we should identify the physical & psychological component of any activity or task and appreciate accordingly.

Action=on field; Inaction=reserve

In sports also, we often see the players on the field. But we forget to appreciate the role of the players kept on reserve. Though they are in inaction mode, they are always ready come in action mode as per the requirement. So, the action & inaction roles are as per the strategy/requirement/situation of the game. Therefore, the action & inaction modes are always dynamic in nature & may be interchanged depending on the situations.

Action=equipment in service; Inaction=Standby/breakdown equipment

For every critical equipment or machine, there will be a standby equipment which is available to come in service when the running equipment fails. So, it is important that all the critical equipment should have standby and the standby equipment should always be ready. It is also crucial to bring back the breakdown equipment to the available state. That is how we should focus not only on the Action state but also on the inaction state.

Action= motion; Inaction= rest

Again, we will go back to Newton to understand this concept better. Previously also we have learnt from his apple story. https://researchsubbu.blogspot.com/2021/07/learnings-from-newtons-apple-story.html. Now let us learn from Newton’s Laws of Motion.

Newton’s Laws of Motion

A body continues to be in its state of rest (Inaction) or uniform motion (Action) unless an external force (God or situations created by God) acts on it. It again explains nishkaam kriya. The action & inaction of us are in God’s hands.

Every action (karma) has an equal & opposite reaction (karma). Our present karmas are reflections of previous karmas & will get reflected in future karmas also. So, our actions & inactions are a result of our previous actions & inactions & will lead to our future actions & inactions. So, we should always focus on our present actions & inactions mindfully.

Our actions & inactions may influence the actions & inactions of others & vice versa. Hence, we should be careful about our actions & inactions considering the holistic perspective.

Beauty & Lucidity of Telugu

Telugu is not only the official language of Andhra Pradesh & Telangana states of India, but also the language spoken by around 82 million speakers. Telugu is the fastest growing language in the USA also and many countries in the world.

Today is the Telugu Language Day… It is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy, who fought for the simplification of the language and access to all…

In Telangana, it is celebrated on Sept 9th, on the birthday of Kaloji Narayana Rao, a poet & freedom fighter.

Krishnadevaraya has said , “Among the nation's languages, Telugu is the best.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telugu_language

When compared to other languages, Telugu has 56 alphabet which speaks volumes for its precision of expression in both written and spoken forms of languages.

Some special literary & art forms exclusive to Telugu are –

Ø  Telugu padyaalu – verses with grammar called chandhassu https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chandas_(poetry)

Ø  Padya naatakaalu- Drama https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telugu_theatre

Ø  Harikatha – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harikatha

Ø  Burra Katha – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burra_katha

Ø  Jaana padaalu – Folk https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telugu_folk_literature

Ø  Avadhaanam https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avadhanam

Paying tribute to such a wonderful language of lucidity, I recall the famous song “మా తెలుగు తల్లికి మల్లెపూదండ” written by Sankarambadi Sundaraachari for the movie Deena Bandhu (1942).

“A garland of Jasmines for our Mother Telugu,

Veneration to the great Mother that birthed us,

With gold in thy belly and grace in thine eyes,

O Mother, from whose smile wealth doth flow!

Full of life and vigor, the river Godavari

Flowing excitedly, the river Krishna

Crops like gold shall they yield bountiful

Gems glinting and shining shall roll forth.

Until the exotic sculptures of Amaravati

The riveting voice of Tyāgayya in his songs

The wondrous writings of Tikkayya have

Truly and gloriously withstood the test of time.

Rudramma's strength and Mallamma's fidelity

Timmarasu's courage and Krishnadevaraya's glory

Until our ears ring with the pleasantries

Thy songs shall we sing, thy games shall we play

Victory to our Mother Telugu, Victory to our Mother Telugu.”

With this inspiration, let me try to come in future with some motivational songs from Telugu movies with its translation in English to spread the positive vibes throughout the world.

New Learning from the Old Newton's Apple Story

We all know about the story of Newton’s apple tree - one day he observed the apple falling on the ground from the tree & started thinking why it was falling down only & why not going upwards… That is the starting point of developing his theory of gravity and earth’s gravitational force. Now let us assume if we were there in the garden, we would have happily eaten the apple or we would have waited for a better apple to fall down… If we observe the difference, Newton’s focus was on the process of falling of the fruit, but not on the fruit itself. But, our focus might be on the fruits. Though there is a least possibility that Newton knows the Lord Krishna’s teachings of Bhagavad-Gita, he has followed it. Nishkaama Karma without phalaapeksha (work without thinking about the fruits/results) is an important thing told in Bhagawad Gita. We should concentrate on the process but not on the results. Efforts are in our hands, not the result (fruits).

Observe the analogy as follows-

Apple- Fruit- Result

Falling- Process

Living in the present, Enjoying the present moment with consciousness & mindfulness techniques also advise us to consciously observe the process without thinking of the result.

Be a 'Star Actor' in Reel & Real Life

If you are convinced that we all are actors and the life is a drama after reading my previous post  Be an 'Actor' of 'Emotions', here is the sequel to it…

If we observe the role & emotional clarity of the star actors, we find several life secrets to learn. Though the star actors act in different roles in different situations & scenes in different movies, they never bring the interference among the roles or emotions. Suppose a star actor has to act in a comedy scene in a movie1 shoot, then in a romantic scene in a movie2 shoot, from there he goes to a movie3 shoot in which he has to play the character of a son whose mother has died- a very sad scene, in movie4 shoot he has to play a college going student role, in movie5 he has to play a role of a thief presented in the court of law – court scene. By the evening or night, he has to go home & play his real roles as a husband, son, father etc. But it is so wonderful that he never carries an emotion of one particular scene to the another. So, there won’t be any interference of the previous scene on the present scene. Otherwise, the performance gets affected. This is what we should learn from the star actors. High level of Emotional Intelligence can be achieved with the realization that we are all actors and the world is a stage.

The other important aspect here is- the star actors never interfere with the roles of the junior artistes. They may become the mentors for the junior actors. But they never spoon-feed the juniors. Always they encourage the uniqueness of each & every actor. The Role Clarity is the important aspect we should learn from this. Most of the star actors focus on their roles and continually improving themselves. They normally give suggestions to the junior actors as mentors only without ego. We have already seen how lack of ego helps in building the relations The Relations are Precious - Happy Father’s Day.  We have never seen a movie/drama in which all the roles are played by a single actor except in monologue. The movie/drama becomes a success when all the actors do their best. The unity in diversity is the key there. It applies to the cross-functional team management also. The director is the person who understands the script requirements and chooses the actors as per their unique capabilities & skills and ensures that those skills are blended well into the effective story telling. It is the same in case of a Team Manager. The real big Writer & Director is the GOD. All the others are like assistant directors for a particular scene or episode. Star actors politely present their views or suggestions to make some corrections in the script. But they never blame the director. Most of the times they don’t interfere in those areas. They always focus on their roles and try to continually improve their performance.

Again, all these learnings are applicable to all of us to perform better in our roles such as husband, father, son, mother, mother-in-law, daughter-in-law, teacher-student, boss-subordinate, peers & in any relationship.

Having the role clarity & emotional intelligence without interference is the key for becoming a Star Actor.

Be a Star Actor to win the hearts of people around you…

Be a Star in both Reel & Real life also...

The Relations are Precious - Happy Father’s Day

Most of the countries in the world celebrate Father’s Day on third Sunday of June. Though it is not there in the Indian tradition, still the concept is taken to celebrate with the children. They give the gifts to the father as a token of love & affection. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Father's_Day )

As we have already discussed in the previous blogs that all these days are celebrated to reinforce / strengthen a particular concept or relation.

People correlate many things to “Father” such as:

God – Father of the World

Scientist/Inventors – Father of a particular science or theory

Priest in the churches – Father

Boss- Fatherly nature

Some people say my dad is like my brother, my friend etc. Some say he is the hero of their lives… Some say he is the villain… why is it so? It all depends on how we maintain the relations.

He is the Head of the family. So, he has

·       to think about the family and take decisions

·       to look after the family and welfare.

·       to take feedback & control

We say- face is the index of mind. Normally the face is seen by ourselves in the mirror. Some people use it for self-analysis & correction. But for some people, the mirror develops the ego. The moment, the ego comes into any relation, there are fair chances that the bonding in the relationship starts reducing.

The relationship without ego is like the plain glass through which we can see the image of the people around us clearly as they are. We can recognize and appreciate as they are. The moment the ego which is like the reflecting material coat on the glass slowly makes it a mirror through which we will try to see ourselves in others. That’s why we hear many times fathers saying he is seeing himself in his kid. Till that point it is OK. But strongly imposing our ideas and thoughts on to the kids and trying to make them as we are or better than us is mostly the father’s thinking. But unfortunately, it is not because of the pure love & affection. The pure love & affection comes when we are able to identify the people around as they are. We should recognize & appreciate other’s unique capabilities clearing the coating of the Ego… Then we will be so much transparent in our relationship. This is another perspective of looking at Transparency in the Relationships… That is removing the ego, recognizing and appreciating the other’s talents.

Just imagine what will you see if you use the mirror to see what the child is doing. Obviously, you can’t see the him/her. You are just trying to find yourself by using the mirror ego. Please remove the reflective coat (ego). So, our mind should be like a pure glass which can pass the light to see the true reflection of the others. There should not be any coat of ego which is a barrier for the relationship.

This concept can be applied in any relationship such as Father-Son, Mother-Daughter, Husband-Wife, Mother in law – Daughter in law, Boss-Subordinate, Teacher-Student, Elders-Youngsters.

So, remove the ego to make a clear & transparent bonding in any relationship. The relations are precious like glasses. So take at most care to preserve them from breaking.

One more aspect I want to discuss here is, the role of a father is to make the son grow and stand on his own and face all the challenges. It is the responsibility of the father to bring up the child as a responsible citizen. Feel the Responsibility to Fulfill the Responsibility.

Turn Inwards & Outwards - Rethink & Restore the Ecosystems – Happy World Environment Day

As we are always very busy in degrading the Environment and deforming the ecological systems, for making us to take a pause and rethink and start contributing towards our Environment, every year World Environment Day is celebrated on 5th June. This is a factual satire from my personal perspective. But actually, it is a great initiative of UN to spread the awareness on Environment Protection. This year, the theme is “Ecosystem Restoration”.

Please go through my previous posts related to the Environment (click on the following) …

Happy Earth Day

Save the Environment & Biodiversity from the “Inhumanity in Humanity”

Happy "World Environment Day"

"Protect the Ozone Layer" to "Get Protected"

Inclusive Growth of Agriculture and Biodiversity with Industrialization

Environment & Sustainability

Wishing Happy, Safe, Healthy & Eco-friendly New Year…

It is always said, “Think before you act”. There are two options to think… Thinking inwards - Thinking about ourselves. Thinking outwards – Thinking about others. “How I get benefit out of something?” or “how others can benefit us?”. I am not talking about these things… These come under selfish thinking. We won’t achieve anything out of these. During the pandemic, we must have heard several times about thinking inwards to understand who we really are… This awareness is self-actualization the highest of the Maslow’s hierarchy. https://researchsubbu.blogspot.com/2021/05/interoception-introspection-happy.html

As per me, turning inward with a selfish goal won’t give any results… Understanding the nature/environment in the holistic spectrum and then shifting the focus to the self is the proper way of achieving the self-actualization as we are the part of the world and we are interdependent on the Environment. The moment the child comes out of the mother’s womb, he/she gets placed in the Nature’s lap… It takes care of that kid by giving proper Oxygen, maintaining suitable temperature, so many other things which help him/her to live throughout his/her life. So, from birth to death, we are dependent on the Nature. Nature also depends on us as we are the people who can take care of it or destroy it. But Nature has its own self adjusting mechanism to find the ecological balance. It is beyond Human Intelligence. We always talk about Biodiversity… Just see how fast the God is to create so many variants of Corona Virus… Still, the human-beings are also fighting against it for the survival. Finally, it is the Survival of the fittest… This is the law of nature and that’s how ecological balance is maintained… But, human race, over a period for so many years, has become very selfish and was fiddling with the ecological balance and spoiling the biodiversity with full of selfishness for the comforts… Deforestation, use of fossil fuels, pollution etc. Earlier in good olden days, we used to depend on the Nature for the survival. But now it has become a greed to get all the comforts at the cost of Nature’s degradation. One more surprising thing you must have observed is, during this pandemic attack of the Environment, the human race is opting for the natural remedies… Most of the people started understanding the importance of Ayurveda which is a pure natural medical science… Just observe the composition of an ayurvedic medicine consists of extracts from several plants. Thus, to take care of ourselves we need to take care of at least those plants… We are dependent on cattle for milk products… This is how the tradition, Culture and Nature are integrated. All the people in the world must have understood the importance of Oxygen for our lives in this pandemic. Seeing from the positive perspective, this pandemic has given huge opportunities of innovation and invention… Similarly, the environmental degradation also gives an opportunity for us to rethink and do something better to restore the ecosystems.

So, let us turn inwards & outwards with the Bird’s Eye View (https://researchsubbu.blogspot.com/2015/10/birds-eye-view.html) to understand the interdependency of Self & the Environment and contribute towards Ecosystem Restoration. Whether it is a business or life, we need to understand both the internal & external environment and the intra and inter dependencies and act accordingly… Thus, again our focus should be like the lenses of the mobile phone. One lens is used for taking the selfie (Looking inward) & the other is for the rest of the world (looking outward). Finally, the mobile is in our hands only… Use it properly…

Every year on 31st May, World No Tobacco Day is celebrated. The initiative is taken up by World Health Organization… This year the theme is “Commit to Quit”.

Normally people start Smoking & Drinking at the young age due to various reasons discussed earlier in my previous post King's Habits

After few months or years, it will become a habit…

Let us now understand the terms Habit, Habit formation & difference between a Bad Habit & Addiction from this https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habit

Habit is a routine of behaviour that is repeated & occurs subconsciously… After so many repetitions habits are formed… it varies from individual to individual… If a habit has an undesirable pattern either to self or society, it is called a bad habit.

This is still at the psychological level… This can be treated by replacing the similar stimuli and increasing the willpower. With solely willpower also, one can easily quit a bad habit.

But if the bad habit is still continued, the physiological/neurological system  gets tuned to the stimuli. Then it becomes an Addiction. Here it becomes difficult to the addicted person though he or she wants to quit the bad habit with full will power as the physiological/neurological system won’t co-operate…These are called withdrawal symptoms… If we forcibly quit the habit, the withdrawal symptoms may increase & may damage the health… some people again restart the habit & go to previous state or worse state – This is called Relapse…

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relapse

To avoid relapse or withdrawal symptoms, we need a help of a psychiatrist/psychologist to guide these addictive persons to come out of these in a healthy way…

After understanding these basic concepts, now let us go for my thoughts….

Smoking kills – This we would have seen many times just before the movie an ad comes… It says tobacco consumption in the form of smoking may cause lung cancer and chewing tobacco may lead to mouth cancers etc…

I say the source of several fire hazards is smoking… The ignition source for fire can be a match stick or a cigarette or beedi whatever in the workplace, industry or petrol bunks or any place where they are strictly.

This, as using tobacco is a health & fire hazard most of the companies have gone for No Tobacco policy and banned the use of Tobacco.

The other important aspect of smoking is it greatly affects the persons around… Passive smoking has a huge affect on the health of the people who are continuously exposed to it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passive_smoking

So the ill effect is airborne… So it becomes a social responsibility to avoid smoking in public as the smokers are damaging the health of the passive smoking.

By reading these lines immediately you might have made the analogy with the COVID-19, airborne, mask , social distancing etc. Exactly you are right. Smokers should be treated similar to the corona spreaders. They should also feel the responsibility to avoid smoking in public areas and this save the passive smokers. Everything is in Our Hands.

One more important connection is there between smoking & corona… Already the capacity & health of lungs might have been compromised with the smoking habit and just imagine this corona virus is also attacking the lungs further to an extent that  the oxygen saturation levels are dropping so drastically that several people are quitting this world…

So just decide… Quit Tobacco or you will Quit the World soon…

Quit smoKING to be the real KING.
