Happy World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day (WMHD) is celebrated every year on 10th of October. This was started in 1992 by World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH). This year, the theme is “Young people and mental health in a changing world”.
Let us now separate the words in WMHD to understand it better.

Health
If we ask someone how is his/her health, it is presumed that he/she was suffering from some illness. Health is always attributed as connected to illness in the background, which has some negativity. The moment we ask someone how is his/her health, the other people around will immediately ask what has happened to him. On the contrary, we say “Health is Wealth”. If it is so, why people have a negative feeling in the background. The perception towards health earlier was simply it was just the absence of disease. Let us now see the latest WHO definition, which clearly added positivity to it.
As per WHO (World Health Organization, “health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." There are two important things in it. One is the word “well-being” is the most powerful word added intentionally to bring the positivity to the word “health”. The second is in addition to “physical” word, “mental and social” words are used for ensuring the complete well-being of a person. This holistic perspective of health everyone needs to understand and strive for the complete health of self and society at large. Social well-being is basically dependent on the reciprocity of the values, ethics and morals in the society and how we follow them.

Mental Health
Mental health is defined by WHO as “a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community”.
If we see the definition carefully, out of four aspects
  1. Realizing his/her own potential
  2. Coping with the normal stresses of life
  3. Able to work productively and fruitfully
  4. To make a contribution to his/her community
except “Stresses”, remaining all the words are positive. Thus, the perception of looking at “Mental Health” as a negative thing should change. Moreover, the definition itself starts with a positive term “well-being”. Sometimes, “Mental Health” is confused with “Mental Illness” and both the words are used interchangeably. But both are different words. Both are not antonyms also as from the very definition of health itself we understood that it is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Mental Health Day
Is “Mental Health Day” different from “World Mental Health Day”? Yes both are different.
Wikipedia says “a ‘mental health day’ is the day when an employee does not come to work and takes a sick day for reasons other than physical illness”.  “Mental health day” thus, represents lack of mental health.

World Mental Health Day
As per WHO, World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health.
The Day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide.

Thus, World Mental Health Day is different from Mental Health Day.

Happy World Mental Health Day

Be an 'Actor' of 'Emotions'

In Bhagawad Gita, it is said that life is a drama and we all are actors. Even Shakespeare reiterated the fact by saying “All the world’s a stage and all men and women are merely players”. These are used in different contexts to explain different concepts useful for mankind. Taking the thought further, from this analogy of life with drama, we can find some more useful concepts….

We should not be carried away by the success or failure. If we see great actors, they are never carried away by the success or failure. They stick to the basics of acting and fulfil the responsibility as an actor to continue to excel in their profession. Not getting carried away by any emotions and having good emotional intelligence is one of the qualities of “Sthithaprajnatha” described in Bhagawad Gita. Some actors who had spent a lot of money on luxuries in their successful days without thinking of future, faced a lot of problems in the days of failure. Thus, always predict the unpredictable and be cautious and save money for future also.

We should not be jealous about others’ roles and charisma. In a movie or drama, many actors act together, out of whom some may be veterans, charismatic and some might be not good at acting. But unless all the actors play their roles properly, the drama can’t be a success. We can observe that they don’t bring in the jealousy at all on the stage while performing. Each individual concentrates on their individual role and performance which adds value to the team performance. 

No blame game. Just imagine if a play is going on and an actor makes a mistake, we often see the other actors nicely manage to continue the play with perfect emotional intelligence and their concentration towards their role. Even they try to cover up the mistake done by the co-actor. It is all done spontaneously and effortlessly on the stage. This speaks of the team spirit and clearly explains we should not do blame game. It is quite often seen that many people blame others that because of his/her fault my work is getting delayed or I could not complete the work etc. This type of blame game has to be changed and mutual cooperation is expected as in the example of the play mentioned above.

Be passionate about our work. We can observe the amount of passion and dedication they show towards the art on the stage. So much of hard work they put in and many rehearsals to perform with perfection. We should get inspired by it…They respect their profession as God.

Teach the skills to the future generations to save the art. The sustainability of some forms of the art is missing already as those have not been transferred to the next generations. Thus, sharing the tacit knowledge and skills including the trade secrets to the next generations is the only solution to ensure the sustainability of the art of working.


As we are termed as actors, let us try to learn how to deliver different emotions with high emotional intelligence as per the scenes and situations of the drama….

Know the Numbers and Optimize the Blood Pressure...

Knowing the numbers first is the most important thing before doing additions or subtractions… The same thing applies to blood pressure also…
The blood pressure should be neither too low (Hypotension) nor too high (Hypertension), should be maintained at the optimum. What is the desired level of blood pressure? Let us “know the numbers first” before doing additions or subtractions.
17th May of every year is celebrated as World Hypertension Day- An initiative of World Hypertension League (WHL) affiliated to the International Society of Hypertension (ISH). For the period 2013-2018, the theme is “Know Your Numbers”.
The blood pressure of the body is measured in mmHg by using the device called Sphygmomanometer/Blood pressure meter or monitor. It gives two values systolic pressure (peak pressure of the arteries during cardiac cycle-when the heart beats) & the diastolic pressure (the lowest pressure during the resting phase of cardiac cycle-between the heartbeats). The difference between these two pressures is the pulse pressure.
The normal Systolic/Diastolic pressure is 120/80 mmHg for a healthy person. Please go through "Understanding Blood Pressure Readings".
By now, it would have been clear that unless we measure it, we can’t know the blood pressure as the symptoms may come at very high or low values. So, always it is better to check the Blood Pressure periodically so that corrective actions may be taken to avoid further raise or fall in case any deviations are there.

Firing the Fire - From God to Ghost

In Indian culture, Fire is considered to be God and is worshipped. The fire under control is truly Godly as it gives heat for cooking, protection from cold wave, in the boiler to generate steam and thereby electricity etc. But once it goes out of control the damage it causes is unimaginable as it becomes a Ghost and the losses are irreparable, irrevocable and irreversible. Thus, understanding the basics of fire, the fire safety measures, the fire fighting methods are very important for one and all.

To commemorate the loss of lives in the fire accident took place at Victoria Dock in the Bombay Port on 14th April, 1944, every year April 14th is observed as Fire Service Day and under the guidance of the Fire adviser, Ministry Home Affairs, Government of India, all the organizations observe the Fire Service Week (FSW) in all the industries.

All the Credit goes to You...

We find the term “Credit” in finance (Taking the credit from a bank or financial institution) as well as in HR (Taking the credit for some work or achievement).

Some analogies—
Giving credit/Taking credit always pays good returns only if it is given to/taken from the right person at the right time.
There should be a balance between the assets (efforts) and liabilities (credits).
Effort=Asset, Credit=Liability

Considering above aspects 4 categories emerge-

1.Effortless Credit   Effort=Asset=0, Credit=Liability   Outcome=Liability
Effortless credit means without efforts taking/giving the credit. If a person takes the undue credit without efforts the outcome becomes a liability. So it is not desirable to give/take undue advantage of something in which no efforts are made.

2.Effort less (minus) Credit          Outcome= Asset-Liability
Putting efforts but not taking credit/Putting efforts and giving credit to others/Motivating for further efforts by not giving credit is this category. This always maintains continual improvement with sustainable competitive advantage for good managers.

3.Effortful Credit       Outcome= -Asset+Liability=Liability-Assets
In this all the efforts are put for taking/giving credit. It is not desirable as the resources are getting drained in taking/giving credit.

4.Effort full (plus) Credit   Outcome= Asset+Liability
Putting efforts and taking the credit for it. The moment we take/give the credit, the feeling of achieving the goal may come. People may get satisfied with the short term goal achievement. It may lead to complacence. But some people may take it as a motivation for achieving the long term big goals.

Let us put all our efforts to be in the 2nd category or at least in the 4th category.

Building the Safety Culture...

To build the safety culture in India, National Safety Council was formed on 04-03-1966.Since then, every year on 4th March, Safety Day is celebrated. From 4th March to 10th March- Safety week is celebrated during which several safety awareness programmes & competitions are conducted.

Here are my views on building safety culture in business organizations/industries/power plants...

Similar to the financial statement for the financial year, every organization may prepare the Safety Report of the activities related to Safety for every Safety Year. Even the individuals may also analyze their concern & contribution towards safety in every safety year... 

From here on wards, 04th March from current year to 03rd March of the next year may be considered as the Safety Year for all the planning, implementation, review & analysis purposes...








Without Safety there is no life, hence no work, no family, no growth. Safety is the most important element to be ensured in each & every walk of life.

Let everyday be a Safety Day...For that the Safety celebrations should not get restricted to Safety Day or Safety Week... It should be "Safety Year"...

Though the Security & Safety have similar definitions, they are different in the context they are applied.Both are for protecting someone or something. Along with the safety, security is also a factor which enhances the security. This can be better explained when we see the types of security-

  3. Social Security
  4. Border Security
  5. Financial Security
  6. Information Security/Cyber Security
  7. Industrial Security
  8. Job Security
The relationship between the above types of Security and the Productivity is explained in the following-






As we can  clearly see that better security will give greater productivity, we can say that the holistic approach in security will secure the productivity with sustainability.

Be a Transformer...

We all know, the transformer works on the principle of Mutual Induction, which is defined as- two adjacent coils, electrically isolated and magnetically coupled, induce Electro-Motive Force (EMF) in each other with the changes in their currents. Similarly, for an organization, to bring in the change in the culture of the organization by redefining the core values, vision, mission etc., the organization should be like a transformer with the induction of mutual respect among the employees. The change brought in one employee inspires the change in the colleagues and the process goes on if all the employees are engaged with trust (magnetically coupled). The magnetic linkage and electrical isolation is the key in the transformer functioning which is possible only due to the mutual induction. In the organizational context, though there is a gap among the employees due to diversity of several forms, they can be well linked through the mutual respect. Once such a mutual respect is established, the trust becomes the core of the transformer to facilitate the mutual induction. Similar to self-induced EMF, self respect and trust also are equally important. Moreover, the EMF induced in the coils is directly proportional to the rate of change of magnetic flux linkages. In the organizations, it is the motivation developed due to the rate of changes/challenges faced by the co-employees. However, as per Lenz's law, the induced EMF will oppose the very cause of its production. This can be attributed to the resistance to change in the organizations. Ultimately, the mutual respect & trust becomes the basic principle for all the organizations to become "the real Transformers in the business scenario".

Pollution-Natural Environment//Corruption-Total Environment

Pollution spoils only the natural environment whereas the corruption spoils the entire environment. It spreads like cancer to damage all the systems in place. To combat the corruption, values, morals & ethics are to be reinforced at all levels though they are primarily implanted at school & family levels. Self vigilance, if practiced properly, boosts an individual to make the the systems healthy & strong without the corruption. If corruption is the virus in the system, self-vigilance backed up with values, morals & ethics will be the perfect anti-virus.
The Government of India celebrates Vigilance Awareness Week every year in Oct/Nov months to spread the dream of corruption-free India. The theme for 2016 is " Public Participation in Promoting Integrity & Eradicating Corruption" as the government alone cannot achieve the goal without the effective participation from the people at large.

CSR3 - Corporate Social Responsibility, Respectability and Reciprocity

As the companies take the inputs from the society for running their business operations, it becomes their moral responsibility to give something in return to the society. Such a responsibility is known as Corporate Social Responsibility. But some companies do not take up this responsibility voluntarily. Thus, the Government of India has come up with Section 135 of the Companies Act, 2013 which mandates the companies operating & have set ups in India with annual turnover greater than or equal to Rs 1000 Crores or net worth greater than or equal to Rs 500Crores or net profit greater than or equal to Rs 5Crores need to spend at least 2% of their average PAT of three previous financial years.

Companies need to not only plan & allocate sufficient budget for CSR, but also ensure the effectiveness of CSR implementation & the social impact measurement through social audits. If the companies implement the CSR policies and report with true spirit, it will be a huge help for inclusive growth of people, planet & profit- the triple bottom line of the sustainability. If the CSR of the companies is effective in environment protection & management initiatives with a collaborative & integrative approach with other companies, NGOs and the MSMEs etc, India will become one of the leading countries with sustained sustainability initiatives setting new benchmarks for the rest of the world.

"Protect the Ozone Layer" to "Get Protected"

International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated every year on 16th September to commemorate the the Montreal protocol of 1987 against the ozone layer depletion.
Ozone Layer is the protective layer for the Earth which is there in Stratosphere and absorbs the UV rays from the Sun. Ozone atom takes the energy from UV rays and breaks into O2 and O atoms. These O atoms will react with O2 atoms and form O3 again. It is a continuous process. As the energy is being taken in these reactions, very less amount of harmful UV rays especially UV-B rays reach the Earth, thereby protecting the living beings from several diseases.
Ozone Layer Depletion is caused by CFC (Chloroflourocarbons), HCFC (Hydrochloroflourocarbons), which are widely used in refrigerators and Air conditioners.  The Cholrine atom gets separated from the CFC when exposed to UV rays on absorption of energy and it combines with O3 to take away O and leaves O2. Thus, the number of O3 atoms gets reduced, which lead to Ozone layer depletion and passage of UV rays to the Earth with high concentration. Halon, Methyl Bromide etc., are some of the other Ozone depleting substances. Methyl Bromide is a pesticide used in agriculture for pest control. Some of the chemicals used in sprays and paints can also damage the Ozone layer. Using the alternatives and natural substances are suggested for protecting the Ozone layer from depletion. While purchasing such products, it is our prime responsibility to check that they will not harm the Ozone layer protection.

In India, it is celebrated on 15th September to commemorate the birthday of Sir Mokshagundam Vishvesvaraya, the only engineer, who received the Bharat Ratna- the highest civilian honour from the Government of India. (Bharat Ratna)

हिन्दी-भारत माँ की बिन्दी / Hindi-India

India is a country with rich cultural diversity. It has several regional languages. Hindi, being the 2nd most spoken language in the world & widely spoken in India, is the official language of the Government of India. The script is Devanagari. The ancient language Sanskrit is written in this script. Hindi Divas is celebrated on 14th September every year. Hindi with Devanagari script was declared as official language by the Government in 1949 on the same day, which was further ratified under Article 343 of constitution of India in 1950. Though the Britishers left India in 1947, still English is being continued in all official communication along with Hindi in bilingual mode.

To promote Hindi as the official language, Hindi Pakhwada (Hindi Fortnight) is being celebrated every year in India in all the central government offices and PSUs.

A Friend in Deed is the Friend in Need now a days...

We all know the proverb " A Friend in Need is the Friend in Deed". The different interpretations are beautifully explained in the website http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/a-friend-in-need.html

My interpretation is as follows---
It is the old proverb which may not fit into the friendships we have in the social networking arena of the modern world.Finding a true friend indeed is the need of the hour now with the advent of making huge number of friends throughout the globe.If we see the fb account now a days, it has become a friend book account in which we add daily so many pages. On the contrary, getting onto the facebook & other networking sites has also been treated as an addiction & a source of stress according to many research results. We also can see so many fraud cases of people with false identities taking undue advantage of the friendship over these networking sites as most of the countries do not have stringent cyber laws enforced properly to prevent the cyber crimes. Moreover, we get many messages also that it is better to spend with the persons who are around you rather than ignoring them and making friends in the virtual world. Facebook also took precautionary steps to verify the identities of the suspicious people. It also asks the users to add the people, whom we really know  personally. Let us use the networking sites for making the true friendship alive and prosper. The technology is in our hands. Let us use it for spreading goodness by making good friends indeed. Thus, the friends with good deeds are needed to be our good friends in the social networking sites...
So a true friend indeed is the friend in need now a days...

King's Habits

When we go to the museums, we observe the smoking and drinking objects used by the Kings along with other ancient objects displayed. As these objects may reflect the King's habits, the children & the youth may think that the smoking & drinking are closely associated with the Kings. Moreover, the advertisements/ brand names of cigarettes & alcohol products are also closely linked to the KING word. If we apply Pavlov's theory of Classical Conditioning, it may so happen that the children or the youth may think that if the person has these habits of Smoking & Drinking then he is the "Real King". Moreover, the research shows that most of the smoking & drinking habits form in teenage. 
Thus, as an ethical practice most of the advertisements of these products give a Warning saying Tobacco KILLS. The same type of warning may also be given in the museums near the smoking & drinking objects so that the children & youth visiting may not correlate these objects with the king's habits & try to imbibe.
Moreover, while educating the youth it is always necessary to provide information of wide variety of habits both good & bad with their effects so that they  can be empowered to choose the right ones.
In the present scenario of life style diseases, walKING is the Real King's Habit, which people at all ages should follow & inspire others in your kingdom. Take a lead as a Real King & help others for good health...

‘Dynamic’ or ‘Diabetic’?

Environments which are external or internal to the people, business, workplace, society & nature etc., are changing dynamically to cause a dynamic change in the health of these systems. This in turn causes a dynamic change in the health of our body & mind also. Those who can produce a dynamic response to these changes can only sustain with good health.  Diabetes is termed as a Life Style disease as it affects the people, who do not make the changes in their life style to combat the life style changes happening due to the environment.  Self discipline & control in food habits, walking, exercises, yoga & meditation etc do keep the sugar levels under control. Let us be dynamic rather than diabetic. There are many cases in which the people do not know that they are diabetic unless they undergo the tests for some other reasons. Thus, it is always advisable to check the sugar levels. Diabetes is a life style disorder which demands for the disciplined life style. It is not a big disease when controlled with good discipline. Thus, it can be preventable. If it is neglected, it may become the root cause for several chronic diseases and disorders. 

Today (7Th April, 2016) is the World Health Day meant for spreading health awareness. The theme for this year by WHO (World Health Organization) is "Halt the rise: beat diabetes".

Pro-active Approach in Safety at Workplace

  • Most of the accidents do take place due to lack of awareness and prediction. Of course, being aware is not sufficient, taking the preventive measures is the most important aspect to avoid the unwanted incidents. Thus, the awareness & the implementation,  when go hand in hand will ensure safety at workplace.
  • Safety is everyone's responsibility. Its the mutual responsibility shared between the organization (management) and the employees.
  • If we look at the different definitions of safety at workplace, mostly it will be a preventive measure to avoid accidents/unwanted incidents/mis-happenings.Little research has been done on the positivity of safety. The perception towards safety should change in order to bring new benchmarks as far as work place safety is concerned.
  • Safety should be considered as a pro-active measure rather than a preventive measure.Innovation in safety has to be encouraged through workshops , seminars, committees & councils etc.
  • Safety should not be considered as a separate entity. It's an integral part of the inclusive growth strategy for good occupational health and environment. SAP-EHS module can be useful for such integration.
  • Safety stewards should take leading role in spreading the information shared in the workshops, meetings etc., to all the employees by conducting training programs, knowledge sharing sessions.
  • The professional circles, quality circles should also take up the safety issues as their projects and find out some improvement methodology to solve the safety related problems.
  • Near miss incidents/best practices/ safety slogans/essays & write-ups related to safety are to be shared in intranet & e-mails.Use of social media can also be explored.
  • The participation rate in safety awareness competitions has to be increased by giving the employees proper motivation.Encouraging the employees to enhance the safety through their innovative thoughts is the key for the pro-active approach on safety.
  • Sharing the minutes of safety council meetings with all the employees will definitely enhance their awareness & increase the vigilance on proper implementation & follow up.
  • With the increased understanding of safety at workplace & paradigm shift in the perception towards safety from preventive to pro-active, any organization can safely reach its targets and set up new benchmarks in overall growth.

Bird’s Eye View

In Mahabharata, the famous epic in India, Drona, the teacher (guru) asks all his students (Pandavas & Kauravas) one by one to aim at a bird and say what they see & finally shoot an arrow on his instruction. Yudhisthira, the eldest, says he sees the tree, the sky, the guru and the bird also. Someone (Bheem) says he sees the tree, the fruits & the bird also. This was almost similar with all the other students. All were instructed by Drona not to release the arrow as they failed to concentrate properly on the target. Finally, Arjuna comes & says he sees only the bird eye. Drona feels very happy & asks him to release the arrow. Arjuna gets the success through his sheer concentration. This story is generally famous to set an example and explain the importance of concentration one should make to reach the target. But we can make several other learnings by critically analyzing it.

If one concentrates on the bird’s eye like Arjuna in the forest, what will happen if a lion or tiger comes from one side? Thus, it is always better to have the Bird’s Eye view of anything i.e., having the bigger picture like Yudhisthira & then should have a focus on the goal like Arjuna. Both qualities combined will give you the success. Even in cricket also, we can correlate this concept of success. The batsman should not only concentrate on the ball, but also consider so many factors like the batting lineup, pitch condition, the target to be achieved, overs remaining apart from his own capabilities along with the runner’s & bowler’s capabilities. Similarly, you can list out the factors for the bowler, keeper & the captain and so on and so forth.  Ultimately, your mind should be like the lens of a camera, which can be zoomed to see the bird’s eye clearly & unzoomed to have the bird’s eye view. If we follow this principle, whether it is archery, cricket or photography, everyone will say “NICE SHOT”. You can think of other examples such as carroms, billiards etc to understand this concept & bring out the analogy. "Be the jack of all trades & master of ONE".

“Test” for the “Best”

Healthiness of a transformer is ensured by periodically testing the oil. Similarly, vibrations of the rotating equipment are monitored to ensure the healthiness & take up predictive maintenance to avoid damage. Anti-virus software conducts regular checks to prevent the intrusion of any malware in the computer system. Quality “tests” are conducted to deliver the “best” products. There are many more examples of testing for ensuring the best performance of the equipment. Basic philosophy of the tests is to give a feedback to take corrective actions to ensure the healthiness. It is not to highlight the faults. We can interpret this logic in daily life. We see students are scared of their weekly tests & other examinations. In fact these examinations give a feedback for improvement in the final annual examinations. So never be de-motivated if you get low marks in the examination. It’s just a feedback for improvement. The pathological tests are conducted to identify the diseases early so that remedies may be suggested by the doctors whereas many patients are so tense about the tests and the results. In fact we only should ask the doctors to suggest the required tests to ensure & maintain good health by following a regular schedule of checking our health. Self analysis is one of the useful tools to check & take corrections to fine tune your performance. There are online tests available for students. Students may test themselves and take required actions to comfortably face the tests conducted at school or college. Glucometer, blood pressure monitor are some of the instruments used by many people to measure the glucose & blood pressure levels respectively to ensure that they are healthy. Be proactive about yourself. We should be “Dynamic” rather than “Diabetic” in our education, career, family life, health & wealth. This will definitely ensure the overall growth.

Driving Towards Your Goal

Life is a journey. Your mind is the driver of your body in this journey. Whatever goals we put are the destinations in the journey. Driving towards the destination safely needs our patience, concentration and the physical fitness of the vehicle. Thus to successfully achieve the goals set in life we need all these qualities. Without a clear map of the road, to reach the destination creates confusion & leads to wastage of fuel, time and ultimately we cannot reach the destination. Moreover, there is a physical & psychological limitation for everyone in travelling through the life for achieving the goals. If we set very big distances to be covered in the journey & we have only a vehicle with less capacity then it becomes very difficult to reach the destination. Either we have to upgrade the vehicle or reduce the distance to be travelled more realistically. This clearly says that the goals we set in life should be realistic, feasible & achievable based on the physical and psychological strengths & the weaknesses we have. Without considering the resources & the limitations, if we set bigger goals, the vehicle may never reach the destination & the journey becomes unpleasant which causes the stress for both the driver and the vehicle. If you choose a path with heavy traffic (high competition), you should have more perseverance and determination. Following the traffic rules is like following the ethics in the competition. Every time you face a vehicle, just take a turn & overtake the vehicles as per the traffic rules. Moreover if somebody is struck up on the road, help them. One more important thing is to keep the focus always on the road & the traffic. Always take a feedback & correct your direction to reach your destination happily & safely.

1.       Set realistic goals based on the capabilities and resources.
2.       Accept your limitations.
3.       Have a clear-cut road-map.
4.       Be ethical in reaching your targets.
5.       Help others to reach their targets also.
6.       Keep the focus not only on the goal but also on the path.
7.       Even if you miss your path, don't worry! Correct your directions of the journey as per the road-map & go ahead.
8.       Be a sustainable vehicle on the road map of excellence.
9.       Be patient when there is a red signal. After few seconds it will become green.
